This vulnerability allows an attacker to trigger a kernel stack overflow by sending a specific "SMB_COM_TRANSACTION2" response. Attacking the SMB client can be achieved by convincing a user to connect to a malicious SMB server. Alternatively, the attacker could attempt man-in-the-middle attacks (such as ARP spoofing, NBNS packet spoofing, etc.) to redirect legitimate SMB connections to a malicious SMB server. Successful exploitation of this issue may result in remote code execution with kernel privileges. Microsoft has published a patch to correct the issue. Technical details ----------------- The following analysis has been performed on an up-to-date Windows 7 x86-32 system. The issue is triggered by sending a malformed "SMB_COM_TRANSACTION2" response: - When the client expects at least one Data or Parameter byte in the response; - If the server responds with an appropriate number of Data and Parameter bytes in accordance with what the client has requested; - If the server appends 1 to 8 additional bytes at the end of the packet and an incorrect "Data Offset" field. Let's trace through an example when browsing an SMB share: - After going through the initial exchange, the client sends an "SMB_COM_TRANSACTION2" request with a sub-command "TRANS2_QUERY_FILE_INFORMATION"; - The malicious SMB server reply with a "Data Offset" field set to "\xFF\xFF" and appends extra bytes (for example "\x41") to the "normal" response. The number of bytes to copy has been returned by mrxsmb10!SmbCeReceiveInd. In this example, it is equal to 0x20, which is the number of bytes expected to fill the FILE_STANDARD_INFORMATION structure (including the reserved fields at the end) plus the extra 8 bytes appended by the malicious server. Data following the FILE_STANDARD_INFORMATION has been overwritten and the stack frame is now corrupted: kd> dd 8bb41824 8bb41824 10000000 00000000 00000000 00000000 8bb41834 00010000 00010000 41414141 41414141 The saved based pointer and return address from the fltmgr!QueryStandardLinkInformation function have been overwritten with attacker's controlled data, which allow to redirect the execution flow: kd> g Access violation - code c0000005 (!!! second chance !!!) 41414141 ?? ??? It is possible to overwrite entirely or partially the saved base pointer or the return address, which could help to circumvent the protection offered by ASLR. [1] The GS heuristic in Visual Studio 2010 have been improved to protect against overflows in structures that don't contain pointers (such as the FILE_STANDARD_INFORMATION one). Unfortunately, this improved heuristic wasn't available when the affected drivers were compiled (more information: http://blogs.technet.com/srd/archive/2009/03/20/enhanced-gs-in-visual-studio-2010.aspx). Solution -------- Apply appropriate security patches published by Microsoft in advisory MS10-020. Alternatively, configure a firewall to block SMB communications with untrusted servers.
